Veteran Hylite: Brian Milicic

Welcome to the inaugural post for our Veteran Hylite blog series! Our first participant is Brian Milicic, a Technical Support Manager who has worked at Hyland since 2006.

Prior to Hyland, Brian served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1996 to 1999 as an Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) Intercept Operator and Analyst. The role was part of the Tactical Electronic Reconnaissance Processing and Evaluation System, which has a great acronym – TERPES. This unit was responsible for tactical electronic warfare and identifying and reporting on intelligence elements.

When we sat down, we started by talking about what he learned while serving in the Marine Corps that has helped him in his civilian career.


“I learned that self-discipline and drive are the foundations to success,” said Brian. “By bringing self-discipline to a team of like-minded folks working towards a common goal, the only limit is what people put on themselves.”

This led us to talking about the obstacles we all encounter in life. And how sometimes, they’re important, as they help us become who we are on our journey.

“We each have our trials and tribulations. I believe it’s not what happens to you in life that matters, it’s how you respond that defines what happens to you next,” he noted. “Without a positive attitude and owning what happens, it is easy to get lost in blame, halting forward progress.”

Lunch with … Abraham Lincoln

I loved seeing this on possible interview questions, so I asked: If you could have lunch with anyone, living or dead, who would it be and why?

“Abraham Lincoln,” Brian told me. “I would like to hear the trials and tribulations and how he maintained solidarity when trying to do what was right, while also going against the social norm.”

Open communication, patience, passion

Work-life balance is important here at Hyland, so I wondered if there was anything Brian learned in the military that has helped him balance his personal and professional life.

“One tip is effective and open communication. If there are times where workload is heavy or overwhelming, it is ok to ask for help,” he said. “Not everyone knows what specific people’s limits are, but team members are willing to help, so it’s important to communicate if you’re overloaded.”

In the end, like most Hylanders, Brian mentioned that it’s a great experience to work with people he cares about. As a manager, he’s learned that helping to make their work more desirable leads to a more effective customer experience.

As for other veterans looking to get into the tech field, Brian shared some advice.

“Be patient and learn as much as you can,” he said. “Also, be passionate about what you want to do.”
