5 ways to get the most out of OnBase training and resources


One of the most common requests I get from our customers is to provide tips, tricks and best practices regarding OnBase. The circumstances vary. They could be related to a particular solution or product, implementing or upgrading OnBase, or a myriad of other topics.

And, if you have ever met me, you know that I am always eager to share OnBase knowledge with others. Always. Ask the guy sitting next to me on my flight home from CommunityLIVE, he’ll tell you all about it.

But, seriously, ask me anything about OnBase training or resources. I am more than happy to provide advice.

And each time I prepare a response, I find myself reviewing our many amazing resources when I’m looking for information. While these may be resources you’re already aware of, I’m going to point out some often-overlooked features.

Knowledge is power

So, here are my top five go-to places for OnBase best practices:

1. Module Reference Guides

You know them, you might even call them “MRGs” like the cool kids do. Sure, you download them to understand how to install, configure, and use OnBase. But, if you dig deep into the MRGs – you will find two of my favorite resources:

Best Practices – This is tried-and-true advice from experienced OnBase professionals related to the modules you use most. I strongly recommend every OnBase professional using or implementing workflow management to review the more than 30 (yes, 30) “General Design” best practices. There are also best practices for performance, related documents, filters, keywords and properties, scripting, timers, e-forms and user forms, servers, and load balancing.

Troubleshooting – Here’s where you’ll find information about the utilities and tools available that may help you diagnose and resolve issues. Different modules have different resources available to help you solve any issues you may experience. And, yes, you also always have technical support available to you, and these experts are happy to help.

2. Best of CommunityLIVE Webinar Series

Were you at CommunityLIVE? If so, you know there were MANY great courses. We covered products, solutions, troubleshooting, new features, and so much more. For those unable to attend the live event — and also for conference goers who just can’t get enough — we’re hosting the Best of CommunityLIVE webinar series throughout the entire month of October.

3. OnBase.com/Community

I know you’re well aware of this resource, but did you know that our products and solutions forums are social? They’re like Facebook for OnBase – a great place to see what’s going on, what’s happening in the life of a product or solution, hear what others are saying, and even provide your own comments.

People get really excited about OnBase and when someone asks a question, the OnBase Community comes together to provide expert advice. For example, there have been questions about how to configure a particular feature in Workflow and how to build an OnBase team for a Healthcare organization. It’s collaboration at its best and it’s a beautiful thing.

To receive notifications of posts, just follow the group. Contribute by asking questions and responding to those posted by others. Together we’re building an amazing knowledgebase that is fully searchable.

4. Training.OnBase.com

Three words: Search all courses. You can search course titles throughout Training.OnBase.com to see any and every course we have available that is relevant to the product or solution you’re interested in.

Anything tagged as eLearning is free and available to you right now! Take a quick class on Workflow, WorkView, or Unity Forms. Or, if you’re about to upgrade to OnBase 16, take one of the free classes about the newest features.

5. Your Account Manager

Every OnBase customer has a great resource in their Account Manager. While this person may not have all the answers, they know where to go to get the answers. Don’t hesitate to contact them.

So, there you have it. My go-to places for gathering best practices, tips and tricks and learning more about OnBase. Use these resources, contribute, collaborate, and continue to learn.
