Our secret to success: We show up every day and stay true to our core values

“How do you do it?”

I field this question over and over again, in all its various forms. How do you sustain and scale Hyland’s culture as the organization continues to grow? How do you maintain your corporate culture in offices around the globe, where the social cultures are different?

How in the world do you do it?

I usually launch into a laundry list of programs, initiatives and strategies that we are constantly striving to perfect:

  • Adding more virtual training opportunities and mentoring programs
  • Benchmarking against successful companies that are bigger than us
  • Asking employees what they want (all the time!)
  • Safeguarding what makes us unique and funneling our energy and funds there
  • Leaning on thoughtful communication tactics and plans
  • Breaking down barriers between teams, departments, offices and regions
  • Enhancing our technology collaboration tools

In the end, though, what it really comes down to is our core values. They have been in place for more than 25 years.

They are the heart of who we are and have never changed.

How we show up to work every day is the true key to ensuring our culture scales.

– Debbie Connelly, SVP of HR

Our core values

Whether you’re building a global company or are a startup, these concepts are what we use as a foundation to grow in a manner that ensures success – both financially and personally.

We conduct ourselves with honesty, integrity and fairness in our relationships with our partners, customers, employees and shareholders.
All dealings with the outside world and with each other as employees are rooted in honesty. We strive to avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest. We maintain our integrity when faced with fierce competition or disappointing news. Our decisions will be fair for all parties involved.

We deliver configurable business solutions that are intuitive to use. Our customers are confident when navigating our solutions.
Our customers do not require significant training on the user interface because it flows naturally. Our customers are able to configure a robust, rapidly deployable solution without programming.

Our customers are our partners.
We approach each business relationship with the mindset that all parties involved have a common goal and we will reach that goal faster working in collaboration as partners. We approach technical and business hurdles “shoulder to shoulder” with our partners and reject failure as an option. We share our ideas and knowledge to the benefit of the partnership as a whole.

Our employees are our family.

We want each employee to reach his or her maximum personal potential while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Our decisions are rooted in a deep sense of care for the individuals that work here and their families. We maintain a respectful and safe environment for all employees. We are interested in the wellbeing of every employee. We value the diversity of our employees, and the different skills and viewpoints that this diversity brings.

We are motivated people passionately dedicated to the success of the company.
Our employees put the success of the company before personal gain. Our employees believe they are part of something great and that it is their privilege to be here. Our employees are proactive and excel at self-direction. Our employees reject cynicism and complacent attitudes. Our employees align their actions with the goals of the company, but stay vigilant in pursuing constant improvement through constructive feedback.

A strong foundation allows culture to scale

Our core values are more than just words. They are the foundation that guides everyone – from interns to executives.

For example, in our annual meeting this January, Debbie Connelly said, “How we show up to work every day is the true key to ensuring our culture scales.”

I couldn’t agree more. The real answer to the question of how we sustain and scale our culture is simple: We count on our employees to continue to live out our core values and “show up” every single day with them in mind.

In some cases, what has made us a successful company today will not be what makes us a successful company tomorrow – and because of that, we are thinking differently, innovating and changing with our future in mind. However, the contrary is also true – much of what got us to this point will also be what ensures we’re ready for what lies ahead.

With that in mind, I call out to all of my 3,500+ fellow Hylanders – take a moment today and reflect on our core values. We can likely all recite the top-level lines, but refresh yourself on them by reading the descriptions and then challenge yourself to bring them to work each and every day a bit more than you already do.

Because they work.

As proof, I’m proud to announce that following these guidelines has earned us a spot on the 2019 Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For List®. This is very exciting, as it’s our sixth consecutive year on the list.

Whether you have been here for all 28 years or were part of our latest new hire class, congratulations and thank you to all Hylanders for this recognition. We did it! Let’s take a couple of minutes to celebrate, and then in true Hyland spirit, start using our core values to earn our spot next year!
