My Hyland Software internship experience in one word: Extraordinary!
Hyland’s campus in Westlake, OH is an ideal workplace where employees can enjoy many fun activities such as playing tennis, basketball, volleyball, cycling, or even taking a nice walk on a forested hiking trail. My first impressions were the healthy environment and highly supportive and collaborative workforce.
When people hear about Hyland Software, they typically think that only Computer Science students are eligible to work for the creator of OnBase. Of course not! Hyland hires interns to work in many functions such as marketing, sales, finance, strategy, human resources, management, education and learning.
I really like that interns must demonstrate creativity and stand out among many applicants for the company to accept them into the Hyland Software internship program. Each intern needs to be passionate about what he or she does.
The interview process: Creativity and being a go-getter beats knowledge
My first interview was different from others that I’ve had in the past. I realized that my personality and core competency had to stand out to get the internship, and I had to show my originality and creative capabilities. It was first about me as a person and second, my technical knowledge and ability to use it in a practical way. My follow-up interview focused more on the area of my interests.
Overall, as an intern, I realized I need to be a go-getter in all aspects and act like a committed full-time employee. Colleagues respect the ideas of interns and welcome opportunities to collaborate and engage with them. To be treated that way makes me want to work even harder and learn faster.
First day, first week
The first day at work was an orientation day. I learned how the company functions and the important links, met with the new interns who came from near and far, and learned about Hyland’s goals. At the end of the day, I met with my team, team leader, and my mentor. I found my desk where I received my laptop. Overall, the orientation day was easy, satisfying and fun.
During my internship period, not only am I working on real projects side-by-side with full-time employees, I am also able to enjoy healthy meals at cafés throughout campus, indoor and outdoor places to sit and enjoy breakfast or lunch, and even play at the Arcade! There are so many indoor and outdoor activities available including video games, table tennis, badminton, volleyball, well-equipped gyms, hair salons, nail salon and spa, music classes, tennis lessons, and even an on-campus wellness center. I can take a short break and get a massage without leaving the campus.
How awesome is that?
Lessons learned
However, the reason all those great amenities exist is because Hyland believes that you should work hard and play hard. And you can’t skip directly to the play hard part, you have to put in the work first.
That successful marriage of work and play is how the company has been able to develop and take to market a leading enterprise content management (ECM) solution for more than 20 years.
I’ve already been exposed to many successful employees who started as interns, and once they proved their value in the internship program, full-time jobs followed. I can see that it’s all about finding your talent and applying it to make Hyland an even more successful company, one that is possibly the happiest workplace in this region.
And, I must say that so far, it’s been one of the best summers of my life!
