Inclusion drives innovation: Disability Awareness Month 2017

As October is Disability Awareness Month, we would like to reflect on the importance different perspectives play in the workforce.

In fact, when commenting on this special month, the United States Department of Labor said, “Inclusion drives innovation.”

We agree. That’s why we partner with organizations such as Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities (CCBDD), LEAP and Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities for our hiring needs. The knowledge, skills and abilities employees bring to work each day are the biggest asset to any company. That’s why it’s important that work environments are flexible and open to the talents of all qualified candidates, promoting workplace success for everyone.

How Hyland open houses improve the candidate experience

Employers have a powerful role in improving employment outcomes for people with disabilities. Therefore, each month, we host an open house for agencies and their candidates to learn about Hyland, view our open opportunities and observe our work environment.

Our monthly open houses are for any candidate who is interested in pursuing a technical career. In 2016, we started conducting these open houses quarterly, but we received such positive feedback, we now host the open houses monthly.

Job descriptions can sometimes be difficult to conceptualize. By offering open houses with the opportunity to tour the facility, see the positions and even try out certain job duties, Hyland allows individuals to get a better grasp of their potential roles. This allows individuals the opportunity to gather more information and make better choices regarding how their skills and abilities match open positions at Hyland.

Jared Daly, Employee Engagement Coordinator for CCBDD

We pride ourselves on the candidate experiences we offer. For more than 25 years, one of our core values has been to treat employees as family, and that starts during the recruiting experience.

That’s how we’ve grown from a one-person shop to a global company with thousands of innovative, diverse employees.

I have attended multiple Hyland open houses with my coworkers, and we have found the events extremely helpful in ensuring we are sending the proper candidates. Hyland has a very unique and energetic environment. By learning about Hyland and touring its facilities, we are better able to screen and refer the right-fit candidates who not only have the proper skill sets, but also would work well in this environment.

Heather Mauk, Business Relations Specialist from Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities

While we continue to grow as an organization, we hope these open houses will help shed light on new opportunities that are available at Hyland. Because we firmly believe that inclusion drives innovation.
