‘A day in the life’ of a Hyland Professional Services Team Lead


Our blog series, A day in the life, explores what it’s like to work at Hyland, in one of a hundred different disciplines.

Today we chat with Kendall Eby, a Hyland Professional Services team lead.

OnBase Blog (OB): Tell us about yourself and your past experiences. How did you hear about Hyland?

Kendal Eby (KE): I grew up around Canton, Ohio. I didn’t attend college right away after high school and when I was 20, I moved to Sarasota, Florida. I lived in Sarasota for four years before deciding to go to college. I moved back to Ohio to attend The University of Akron.

I got a job after college for a local company in Canton, which was my first real exposure to technology. While working there, a friend of mine was leaving the company and interviewing at Hyland. She told me about the company and how it was growing and the exciting path the company was heading in.

After doing a lot of research, although I liked the job I was currently in, I decided to apply at Hyland and check it out for myself.

OB: How did you choose your career path? What led to the choice?

KE: I started my career in technology doing Information Security. It didn’t take me long to figure out how incredibly bored I was doing it. I was in charge of granting users access to different systems along with gathering approvals from different departments for access to their systems.

I couldn’t believe the amount of time I spent sending emails back-and-forth and just waiting on responses, so I decided to come up with a better way. I’ve always had a mindset of looking for better ways of doing things, finding ways to do those things more efficiently, and questioning why we do things the way we do them.

I developed my first application to automate an approval process and basically eliminated the need for my own job. Smart right? But this gave me the opportunity to start looking at other business processes and ways to improve them. I found that this is what I was passionate about. When I looked at Hyland and saw an open Business Consultant position focused on workflow and process improvement, I knew this was the exact career I wanted to be in.

OB: How did you go about getting your job? What kind of education and experience did you need?

KE: When I went to college, I still had no specific idea of what I wanted to do with my career. I knew I wanted it to be centered on technology, so I received a degree in Computer Information Systems from the University of Akron.

My degree gave me a wide level of experience around many things such as relational databases, HTML, coding, and a focus on networking. My experience of using technology to eliminate my repetitive, boring and mundane daily work tasks is what led me down the path of gathering experience in improving work processes and making them more efficient.

Early in my career, I had a boss who gave me the ability and time to work on process improvement. She recognized my passion for it and completely redesigned my job to allow me to focus entirely on making my group more efficient, in the hopes that it would pay off. She took a chance on me because she could see how passionate I was, and that allowed me to start to mold what I wanted the rest of my career to look like.

OB: What technology do you work with closely (e.g. certain databases, servers, programming languages, etc.)?

KE: One of the things I love about this job is the different technologies that come up in every solution. We work with different types of databases from SQL to Oracle. We have many different types of integrations with all different types of line of business systems.

We work with different platforms like accessing OnBase through Outlook, different web browsers, or even from various mobile devices. Different solutions can involve HTML, JavaScript, and even some coding in our API.

OB: What are some projects that you have been working on recently? What do you spend the majority of your time doing?

KE: I spend the majority of my time at work building solutions. My team and I spend a lot of time doing discoveries and documenting our solutions as well. I love the different types of projects we get to work on. The last few projects have been incredibly challenging and different in many ways. I recently completed a Construction Project Management solution for a healthcare company in Minnesota, an automated pricing tool for a steel company in Ohio, and a shipping tracking system for a customer in Kingston, Jamaica.

The shipping system was one of the most fun solutions I’ve ever built, because it was so different from anything I’ve done before. We built a system to allow the customer to track shipping containers coming in from the Kingston port and calculated the time it was taking to ship, haul, and unload each container. This helped the customer identify bottlenecks in the shipping process and improve the efficiency in the different areas where they were losing time. I don’t know of another solution anyone here at Hyland has built like it!

OB: What are some of the common misconception(s) associated with your job?

KE: One misconception is that we often build the same solution over and over again. We do a lot of Accounts Payable and Contracts Management solutions, but every solution we build is very different. Every solution we build is catered towards that specific customer’s business requirements.

This job never gets boring. Every project we start comes with a new set of rules and a new set of requirements which demand that we be creative to come up with a new way of solving and meeting those requirements. People often ask if we get bored just building one solution after another. They have no idea!

OB: What are your average work hours?

KE: I would say I always average around 40 hours per week.

OB: What is most enjoyable about your job?

KE: The most enjoyable part of my job is the team I work with. We have a very close team and have developed a culture in which we all work closely together. We are often meeting to review the projects we are working on in order to share ideas and help solve any problems. We have a lot of different personalities in our group, but everyone works hard and really enjoys coming into the office. Most days, I really do look forward to coming into the office and working with the people around me.

I also love traveling to the different companies and customers we get to work with, and working on all different kinds of projects. It’s exciting to learn about different processes in so many different kinds of industries and meeting and working with new people all of the time.

OB: What are some personal tips for doing this job well?

KE: In this job, it is very important to be curious and understand why things are the way they are. It’s important to not only ask a lot of questions, but to truly understand everything about the process you are building.

If you don’t ask the right questions, you may miss an important part of a process that could change the way you design and build a solution. People who are naturally curious, not afraid to ask why, and are willing to challenge others on the way things have always been done will do well in this position.

OB: What is the worst part of your job? What helps you deal with it?

KE: The worst part about my job is writing documentation. I have never enjoyed writing anything. It’s something that is really important on every project we do, but I’ve always enjoyed the creative part of this job much more.

To deal with it, I just don’t put it off. When it comes time to start documentation, I sit down and work on it until it’s done. Putting it off just seems to make it worse.

OB: What is your advice for people who are interested in this position?

KE: If you are interested in my position, come check it out. This is one of the most rewarding and challenging positions I’ve ever been in.

As for advice, I would learn to be comfortable with public speaking and talking in groups. You will be leading conversations in front of large groups of people at customer sites. You need to have an interest in technology and be able to learn quickly. Getting experience gathering requirements from groups of people and applying some sort of technology to meet those requirements and improve processes is great experience coming into this role.

OB: How do you progress in your career path? How can you move up in your field?

KE: The Professional Services Group has different levels of Business Consultants. There is an Associate Business Consultant, Business Consultant, Senior Business Consultant, Lead Business Consultant, and Team Leader.

I started at Hyland as a Business Consultant and have since moved into a Senior Consultant role and now have moved into a Team Leader position. Whether you want to move into a more technical lead role or a management role, there are different career paths and positions for you to move up into. Our leadership is always working with you on defining the career path that you are interested in and setting goals for you to achieve to advance your career. Global Services has many different departments and opportunities that are available for you to grow into if that’s where your interest is.
