Live from Gartner Symposium: Top 4 Ways to Successfully Implement a Mobile Platform

mobileMobility isn’t going anywhere. And if you’re like attendees at Gartner Symposium, you’re ready to embrace it. But how do you revamp your IT platform to include mobile access?

According to Symposium presenters Steve Sterka, development manager, and Tom Cipolla, mobile and SharePoint Technologies manager, both of TIAA-CREF, there are four essential ways you can evolve your IT infrastructure to include mobility:

  1. Don’t be afraid to act now. New solutions will always be created, so don’t wait around for the perfect one. Work with an independent software vendor to help determine your needs and what would work best in your organization.
  2. You must be a business analyst and an evangelist before you write code. You need to explain to stakeholders throughout your company the value mobility will bring to the specific processes you’re targeting. What’s the business benefit? How will you demonstrate its value?
  3. Look for and promote quick wins. Don’t start with the enterprise – find small areas and processes that would benefit from mobile access. The key is to show stakeholders the immediate benefits mobile can bring. Then, you can continue to leverage that success throughout your organization.
  4. Focus on highvalue, custom workflows specific to your business needs. In addition to quick wins, what’s going to have the biggest impact on your organization? Examine some of your custom workflows and determine whether or not they’d be a fit for mobility.

However, to ensure these tactics work, it’s imperative that you continually explain to stakeholders the value mobility will bring now and in the future.

“Sometimes, leaders don’t understand what mobility will do for them and it gets cut from budgeting,” Sterka said. “Help be the evangelist and build that story.”
