Traffic on the show floor noticeably lightened late yesterday afternoon as HIMSS14 attendees jockeyed for seats to see Hillary Rodham Clinton deliver the day’s keynote address.

The former First Lady, New York Senator and U.S. Secretary of State received a warm welcome from an audience on the front lines of putting healthcare initiatives into action. As she shared her views about using healthcare reform to encourage preventive care, greater transparency and improved access to care, some could say she was preaching to the choir.

Clinton also received applause when she noted that the country is moving away from employer-based healthcare toward a provider-led community-wide system.

Our industry is evolving, due in part to healthcare reform and legislation, but also because it has to evolve – because we are evolving. Look at the strides we’ve made in our technology, our treatment, our practice of medicine since the start of this organization in 1961. The challenge before us now is to take what isn’t working and find creative, effective and collaborative ways to fix it.

“We are on the cusp of astounding change,” Clinton said and, I, for one, am proud to be part of it.

As we sunset HIMSS14, let’s do so with an eye toward the horizon.
