This morning’s keynote speaker, Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini, laid it all out: It’s on us to build a new foundation for health – one that invests in wellness, takes care of the chronically ill and aligns incentives to do so.

It’s easier said than done. Facing the rapidly increasing occurrence of chronic disease, the overall health of our communities, our country – our world – depends on it. Luckily, we healthcare folks aren’t ones to shy away from a challenge.

Here are some keynote quotes that resonated with me, and some of my thoughts about them.

You said it, Mr. Bertolini.

I agree that the “iron triangle” of health (access, quality and cost) is an equation so complex it can’t be easily solved. I also agree that the best way to tackle it is by changing the variables – by addressing both how and where consumer needs intersect with provider needs and then focusing on access and quality.

Improving the systems that support healthcare organizations is crucial if we are to reduce the 30 percent of healthcare dollars that are wasted each year. But, not just any solution will do.

Met with near uproarious laughter, this comment during the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC)’s Town Hall session this morning is funny because it’s true. Healthcare organizations and the software vendors who support them are at the mercy of ever-changing regulations. So, while organizations are making decisions about the systems that support them, they must do so with an eye toward the future.

While walking the floor this week, make a point to ask the tough questions: How well does your solution integrate with my (insert application here)? Is your solution Meaningful Use certified? How flexible is it? How scalable is it? What can I expect in return for my investment – and how soon can I expect to see it?
