When universities go to school

This June, I had the pleasure of joining Hyland’s higher education team at the Midwest OnBase User Forum, hosted by the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. As a sales intern, I was eager to learn more about OnBase and how customers implement our solutions on campus.

On top of that, I have been a Fighting Irish fan since I was in diapers, so I quickly accepted the invitation. At the forum, I staffed the registration table, allowing me to interact directly with current and prospective customers. Voicing their thoughts about our products and plans for future projects, the attendees provided me with valuable insight regarding real-life OnBase implementatons.

Customer success in action

The event featured several key speakers who painted an in-depth representation of the solutions we provide institutions. Bill Filion, vice president of Development, delivered an introduction to OnBase 17 and described how the updates we implemented were customer-driven. In fact, out of 9,000 changes we made for this year’s release, more than 3,500 of them were customer-driven.

Highlighting Hyland’s commitment to providing the best software possible with an easy-to-maneuver interface, Filion spoke about our dedication to serving our customers. Then, Carissa Nettle, Hyland’s services program manager, led a step-by-step, hands-on walk through of OnBase forms and workflow management to demonstrate to prospective customers how easy it is to implement solutions with this functionality.

For current customers, she discussed more challenging improvements, like strengthening existing solutions. For me, it was helpful to watch a detailed demonstration of how OnBase easily integrates with a university’s current interface. As a rising senior at John Carroll University, I realized it supports the software I have been using the past three years to schedule my classes.

Solutions in action

My favorite part of the day was when three customers, the University of Notre Dame, Northwestern University, and the University of Northern Iowa presented case studies.

Notre Dame discussed how the Athletics department will use OnBase to transfer from a paper-based system to one that is electronic. The NCAA requires Notre Dame to provide detailed information on every athlete for the allocation of funding and financial aid verification. Using OnBase, Notre Dame hopes to increase the quantity of supporting documentation for its Athletics department to 100 percent in the next few years.

Northwestern presented how the university creates and updates solutions for constant growth and improvement in the human resources department for processes like recruitment, onboarding, and professional development. Northern Iowa talked about the speed and accuracy of advanced capture and how the university plans to further utilize its capabilities.

Throughout these discussions, I noticed many similarities. Everyone was looking for a lean, risk-aware, cost-effective, well-structured, and easy-to-use platform. In my eyes, the presence of successful customers at this forum proved that OnBase is that platform.

We encouraged everyone to ask questions and participate throughout the day. This ensured that the universities in attendance left with a better understanding of our higher education software solutions and how they can alleviate current stressors of their systems.

There was also time for guests to mingle with one another, discuss their personal experiences, and share best practices.

A Solution Experience Lounge for anyone desiring one-on-one time with a Hyland professional to ask questions and get feedback was open throughout the event. It allowed the higher education team to focus on each university’s individual needs. I was incredibly impressed by the focus put on every person in attendance. Every question and concern was addressed in full.

Intern in action

As an intern, I finally began to see the real-life applications of the software I have been studying.

I am thankful that I had the opportunity to attend the Notre Dame event. Hyland devoted a lot of time and energy to the programming of this event and it certainly paid off.

Acting as a sponge, I took in as much information as possible and hope to use the knowledge I gained to better understand the projects assigned to me in the higher education sales division. Needless to say, the event facilitated growth in my understanding of OnBase, and I look forward to the remainder of my internship with Hyland.
