Managed Services: Because we all need a little help sometimes

Next week, we’re taking a family vacation. A week may not seem like a long leave, but now that we have Archie, our almost 50-pound, five-month-old puppy, we have to figure out what to do with him while we are away.

Obviously, we can’t leave him unattended. The thought of that is a combination of hilarity and terror. … And most likely illegal.

I am not even sure if boarding him is an option at five months old.

I want to leave him with someone who has experience with dogs. Someone who knows him, his routines, his quirks. Someone who I know I can trust.

We are fortunate to have my brother and his wife nearby. They are that trusted source we know we can depend on to take care of our newish, fluffy family member while we’re away. I know we don’t have to worry about anything.

For example, they have a lot of experience with dogs, as they have one of their own, Teddy. They will take care of everything from feeding to playtime, and even reporting to us with photos and videos of our pup. It gives us peace of mind and allows us to focus our energy on something else – in this case skiing, snowmobiling, and enjoying our time together as a family.

When someone on your team takes time off or leaves suddenly, you want to know that the things you care about are taken care of. Whether we are talking about a puppy, or a tier-one enterprise application, you need someone you know you can trust.

An on-demand extension of your team

Sometimes this need may not be for an extended period of time. Sometimes you just need the right person or team, at the right moment.

As another example, on days I can’t be home, Archie would be home alone for about eight hours. For anyone that has ever had a puppy, you know that is way to long for their little bladders and bounding energy. So, when I’m gone, we have contracted with a neighborhood dog walker to come over halfway through the day, visit with Archie, take him outside to do his business, and maybe even for a little walk.

We pay her only for the time we need, and let her know with as much advance notice as we can.

She is able to fill in for us, when we need, for the length of time we need her. She is a lifetime dog owner, and we know she has the expertise and experience to take good care of our four-legged fur child. She is also great at giving us progress reports, and has even recognized and suggested little needs, such as the need for a new collar for Archie when he was close to outgrowing his.

For us, our dog walker is an extension of our team – when and at the scope that we need her. She’s an on-demand trusted expert, an augment to our family/team to perform the functions we normally would if we were home, an outsourced admin we can turn to when we need help with Archie.
