Home is where the work is: Empowering your remote workforce

I’ve always loved the phrase “home is where the heart is.” It conveys a sense of togetherness, no matter where you are in the world.

In thinking about that, maybe now “home is where the work is” as well.

Perhaps it has been challenging to separate the two. However, working remotely can actually help to align our vision. Because to have heart in your work means that no matter where you sit – the kitchen table, the living room couch, or a tiny nook somewhere in the corner of your home like me – we can continue to serve and care for our customers.

For a while now, we’ve all been talking about digital transformation, going virtual, digital engagement, etc. But now we’re living it. For many of us, work has changed dramatically in the last few months.

So now is a good time to take a look and see if we are set up to do it as well as we can.

Bringing your vision to reality – remotely  

For example, my team – Hyland’s Enterprise Advisor group – has always worked remotely. But that doesn’t mean we didn’t have to adapt.

The challenge? It’s our job to go onsite and conduct strategic workshops with our customers, facilitating discussions about solutions, challenges, processes, and expansions.

A few months ago, we thought remote workshops were impossible. We worried about engagement and the quality of end-user discussions when we weren’t in the room to connect and encourage open dialogue.

But I’m here to say, it can work! With the right people in the “room” (kitchen, living room, or otherwise), we can be engaged, productive, and continue to solve challenges that stall progress.

Case in point. A peer and I were facilitating a virtual strategic workshop recently, and I was encouraged by the level of engagement throughout the process. We delivered the workshop remotely over two days with a great turnout that included three business units, the IT department, and the executive leadership team.

Our conversations focused on the organization’s goals, key challenges, and how it could utilize the solutions it already owns to improve processes. Sure, I miss being with the customer, working side by side through organizational goals and processes that may need tweaking, but those conversations don’t have to stop.

And guess what? They didn’t stop! I was so glad to see that we can all still embrace change management, even if we’re doing so through a screen. Because at the heart of all change are the tough questions we need to ask.

Questions like, how are we interacting with our customers? Are they getting what they need? How are we interacting with coworkers? Are we moving things forward? Are our meetings productive?

Put your heart into it
