In a world of ‘fake news,’ whose info can you trust? Yours


As 2016 winds down, one particular news story is top-of-mind for most Americans: Fake news. You know, content that purports to be true, is delivered in a news format, and is typically published to nurture hoaxes, conspiracies, propaganda, and disinformation.

Fake news became real news when media and political experts suggested its social media proliferation possibly swayed the 2016 U.S. presidential election. It even led to one incident in which an armed man “investigated” a Washington, D.C., pizza shop based on fabricated information published online.

When you boil it all down, what we’re really talking about is bad information. Whether incomplete, taken out of context, or completely fabricated, bad information at best leads to confusion. At worst it undermines trust.

It’s all about trust

As organizations, the information we’re dealing with day-to-day is not news. But the way we collect and disseminate it isn’t all that different.

We want to collect all the facts, gather all the figures, and paint an accurate and complete picture of whatever story we’re trying to tell. Doctors, claims adjusters, admissions staff, law enforcement – all of these professionals want and need the entire story of the people they are serving: The patients, the policy holders, the students, the community.

If information is incomplete – if it can be taken out of context – it could lead to a misdiagnosis. Or losing a star student to another university. It can even erode well-established trust among customers and constituents.

More than anything else, you want your users to trust the information your organization delivers to them.

Keep your real information safe and secure
