Content in context – in the cockpit and beyond

Meeting looking at a computer

Imagine your next stint of business travel starts with the pilot announcing that his controls are down, but don’t worry because he’s ready to “wing it.”

The friendly skies don’t seem as friendly now, do they? If you’re anything like me, you’d be out of that seat and off the plane faster than the flight attendant could say “tray tables up.”

No one would argue that a professional pilot’s access to timely, accurate information is key. If there is anyone that really needs to be brilliant in the moment, it is an airline pilot. But the same goes for your employees. Are you setting them up for successful flights?

We know pilots are well-equipped. If you peek into a cockpit, you’ll see hundreds (if not thousands) of controls, buttons, levers and dials. All these information sources help pilots make smart and often split-second decisions – whether that’s avoiding a thunderstorm, ascending to a smoother altitude, communicating with ground control or even making a miraculous emergency landing on the Hudson River.

Fortunately, for pilots – and their passengers – all the information they need is where they need it, when they need it, allowing them to navigate through a variety of often unpredictable situations.

Making your skies – and information access – friendlier

But a cockpit-like experience benefits more than just the airline industry. Every organization, every knowledge worker can benefit from having a comprehensive view of all the information they need to navigate unpredictable situations and make smart decisions. The right content, in context, can make all the difference – whether that’s placating a dissatisfied customer via exceptional, personalized service or effectively investigating a fraudulent transaction with access to client history.

Like pilots, organizations are juggling many different sources of information on a regular basis. In fact, according to a 2015 Forrester Consulting study commissioned by Hyland, 45 percent of companies use 100 or more applications to manage critical information, and about a third of those (17 percent) use 1,000 or more!

However, unlike a pilot who benefits from a consolidated view, organizations’ applications and information are often siloed, requiring workers to spend time searching in multiple places for the information they need. This would be akin to a pilot looking in one spot for current weather conditions, wading through emails from ground control for an updated flight plan and then walking to the back of the plane to ask a passenger for a turbulence update.

Get rid of process bottlenecks and ‘flight delays’

For organizations, this kind of IT and application sprawl causes not only process bottlenecks and “flight” delays, but also impacts customer service and employee productivity.

And the challenges are amplified when we talk about the needs of different workers across various business units or departments. Just as each type of aircraft has a different set of controls and requires a specific set of knowledge and context, the experience and information needs of different knowledge workers vary extensively across an enterprise (e.g. your attorneys don’t need the same information as your facilities management staff).

How then, can IT leaders effectively meet the needs for a unique set of controls for their business users? The Forrester study found that 88 percent of organizations are still stuck in a buy vs. build mentality – choosing to buy costly and limiting off-the-shelf point solutions or spending time and resources custom coding new applications.

Delivering content, in context

But there is a better and faster way to deliver solutions, propelling workers toward moments of brilliance and delivering content, in context, for a variety of specific needs. The right enterprise information platform does that, combining the ability to manage content, processes and cases. Whether you need to easily integrate important systems so they can communicate and share process-specific information, or you need to empower employees with information access via case management software, the right solution gives you these abilities.

It’s all about providing a smooth flight that leaves on time and lands early.
