Why training matters, in running and system administration

Recently, someone at work asked me to explain why training matters. Thinking about my answer, I wanted to show that our customers who attend ongoing training are better prepared to support, maintain and grow their solutions.  So… I went for a run to think about the ways that I could approach this.

Just as there are many methods I can use to become a better, faster and stronger runner, there are many methods OnBase professionals can utilize to improve their knowledge.

As I ran, the most obvious method that came to mind was our week-long System Administration training class.

Software training for the long-haul

Just as training for a marathon takes more than a week, becoming a knowledgeable and resourceful professional doesn’t happen with just one week of System Administration training. It’s an ongoing process. But this foundational course is a great place to start your training. The week of training gives System Administrators exposure to architecture, best practices and resources.

But most importantly, it introduces them to a network of fellow OnBase professionals. Who better to bounce ideas off than people who live and breathe the same successes and issues you experience?

There are a lot of other topics OnBase System Administrators need to know about: Security, database maintenance, deploying the initial solution, and integrations just to name a few. In many cases, we don’t even know all of the topics we will need additional knowledge about until the time comes.

That’s why our training offerings are so flexible.

For running, it has taken me years to learn about other important things like my pre-race diet (Nutella and banana toast in case you are wondering) as well as my post-race practices. A big part of my learning process has come from talking to other runners at organized group runs, reading blogs and FaceBook posts and trade magazines. Just like our software suite, running technology is constantly evolving and it is good to know about the latest products and trends.

As an OnBase professional, you constantly encounter new opportunities for growth. Having an arsenal of educational resources available for reference allows you to quickly access relevant technical content to assist in making smart business decisions.

Premium Subscription offers just that: On-demand technical training. What you need, when you need it.

Premium Subscription is available to every customer and partner (and their entire teams) 24/7/365. There are no limits to the number of courses you can complete – and you can complete them anytime, anywhere.

Additionally, there are often people outside of the standard System Admin role who need knowledge. From Database and Network Administrators to Business Analysts and end users, Premium has an arsenal of classes to support anyone and everyone who supports our solutions. (Just as I have trained my support crew to help me before, during and after a long run.)

The courage to start

Sometimes the most challenging aspect is just knowing how to get started.

John “The Penguin” Bingham, a columnist for Runner’s World magazine, has a quote that is well-known in the running community: “The miracle isn’t that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.”

Oftentimes, an OnBase professional doesn’t know where to start his or her training journey. Our customers and partners enjoy a plethora of resources. However, to someone just starting out, it can be overwhelming. That is why Education Services offers a free service to help you create a training plan to gain the knowledge you need to excel at your job.

So, let’s get started.

Whether you are training for the Hy-5 on May 14 or the Cleveland marathon on May 15, or you want to expand your solution into a new department or prepare for your OnBase 16 upgrade – you need a plan and resources to support you.

We’re ready and waiting!
