The other day, I overheard someone say, “Every journey begins with a plan.”

I’ve been thinking about that statement ever since, because while it sounds sound, it simply isn’t true. A better saying might be, “Every journey begins with a catalyst.”

Some examples of journeys that did not start with a plan:

  • An abandoned dog on the side of the road catches the eye of a physician (my cousin) driving by. The physician lets the dog into his car and into his life, and discovers he has the perfect temperament to be a therapy dog, changing the lives of many patients in the hospital where the doctor practices.
  • A company long admires its biggest rival, and through a series of market shifts and circumstances, the two companies join forces, converge capabilities and emerge stronger than ever. The improved organization goes on to lead the market, serving its customers and its customers’ customers better than ever.
  • Another company’s IT team, embarking on a digital transformation journey, must pivot from its original course of implementation to an accelerated schedule with considerable expansion. High-availability requirements necessitated a comprehensive, deep-dive investigation of infrastructure and business process analysis across a global network to ensure required solution performance.

Unexpected journeys? Yes.

Could they have benefited from expert guidance on next steps to take along the way? Absolutely.

The right plan creates a foundation to capitalize on opportunity

Not every journey starts with a plan, but one thing is certain: every journey ends with a destination. Ensure your digital transformation journey has the foundation to ensure success. This includes having the agility to pivot towards an opportunity, similar to the second example in the bullet points at the beginning of this post.

The organization in that example, Coke One North America (CONA), along with its Hyland technology partner, was able to identify bottlenecks in processing and resource utilization, and scale infrastructure ahead of rapid growth. With new expansion requirements, CONA put together a plan to conduct regular Infrastructure Performance Assessments, or Health Checks, as well as regular site visits to customers in order to assess business processes.

The organization grew operations by more than 1,000 percent in less than five years, improving outcomes for their customers and their customers’ customers in a highly competitive market.
