Taking the stairway to heaven, or HIMSS Level 7, at #CommunityLIVE


It has been an interesting year. I have listened to Big Ben chime as I walked along the Thames, stood on the observation deck of the Marina Sands and looked out over the Singapore Harbor, and held a koala bear. All while I was working. Seriously, I have the best job ever!

But this week is my favorite trip. I am at CommunityLIVE in Las Vegas. Not a bad place to go to work. But the best part of this work week is that I get to spend it with our customers.

The teleconference, email and Instant Messenger has forever changed how we conduct business. Although I am grateful I no longer travel 150,000 air-miles every year, at the same time, I miss the human contact. I miss sitting down across a table from our customers and just talking. I miss hearing what they are doing.

Basically, I miss being face to face.

I am always excited to hear the great stories our customers have to tell. I am constantly astounded at the creative ways they use OnBase to solve problems across their enterprises. I keep track of how many departments’ hospitals have deployed OnBase – I think the record is 20. (Please come and tell me I am underestimating!)

However, my favorite part of the conference are all the case studies, and this year is no exception. They range from practical to creative to inspiring. One example is an organization that details its complete, yet simple, plan to execute an incremental upgrade. If you have never considered an incremental upgrade, the case study presentation by Novant – Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. – will make you a believer.

Take the stairway or the elevator?
It took Robert Plant almost a year-and-a-half to write “Stairway to Heaven.” If only it took hospitals that long to climb to HIMSS Level 7. Today only 3.7 percent of hospitals have accomplished that for both Ambulatory and Inpatient.

MetroHealth Medical Center has reached that top level. If you are trying to make that climb, you will find it interesting to learn how MetroHealth used OnBase to help on its journey.

Or you can hear how Wisconsin Physician Services (WPS), in a little over a year, went from storerooms overflowing with paperwork, lines at the printers, and full of paper everywhere to digital information that’s readily available to clinicians and staff within the healthcare software solutions they already use and know. WPS converted those storerooms to conference rooms and now the only lines are at the coffee machine.

It is a terrific story to hear. I have been enthralled with it since I first heard it and I am excited for everyone else to hear it, too.

But one story is guaranteed to move you. I do not want to give too much away, but it is the story of an amazing man who lead an amazing life and inspired a group of people from three companies and one hospital to come together to find a solution to an experience that frustrates patients every day in every single hospital in the U.S.
