What is fuzzy logic and why should you care?

We all know Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear.

But what in the world is fuzzy logic?

Alas, before we talk about logic, we must first talk about brains.

Nothing grey about this matter

With Brainware for Invoices, you leverage intelligent capture technology to drastically reduce the need to manually enter data for both PO and non-PO invoices. The solution empowers you to automate PO-based invoices and achieve true touchless processing, as well as automate GL-coding for non-PO invoices so they automatically enter the approval workflow.

You may already have some form of automation in place – whether it’s EDI, EIPP, imaging, or workflow. And your solution may be somewhat “paperless” because invoices arrive via email. But even if you have automated most of your invoices, thousands of them may remain. Possibly millions.

Often, these are the most complex, non-PO invoices. And they seem impossible to automate.

But, with the right intelligent solution, you quickly transform even your most costly, error-prone AP processes into revenue-generating, value-added operations. You accomplish this by:

  • Capturing early payment discounts
  • Preventing duplicate payments
  • Minimizing errors associated with manual steps
  • Automatically verifying the validity and accuracy of data
  • Easing monthly, quarterly, and year-end closings

Increasing visibility

With intelligent technology, you speed your invoice processes from days or weeks to mere hours, providing near real-time insight into the status of your liabilities – empowering you to make more-informed financial decisions.

You also have access to metrics regarding the overall efficiency of invoice processing, from receipt of invoice to posting of payment. And you have a complete audit trail of who did what and when.

Meanwhile, with a template-free, human-like learning approach to data capture, you get the system up and running quickly, enabling ROI with page one on day one.

Getting fuzzy

Okay, we made it to what you really want to hear about: Fuzzy logic.

Brainware for Invoices enhances data matching and validation by employing fuzzy logic to improve extraction results. This enables it to match extracted invoice data to back-end information – even when it’s not identical. This is critical for automating line-pairing of partial invoices to the corresponding purchase orders.

The solution also employs fuzzy logic to automate general ledger coding for non-PO invoices. As it extracts line-item data from the invoice, it matches it against GL codes and appends it to the invoice automatically.

But what exactly is fuzzy logic?

To find out, I turned to a Hyland subject matter expert who wishes to remain anonymous.

“Fuzzy logic is a way to reconcile the idea that things can be partially true, rather than a binary ‘true or false,’” said my source.

“For example, you might say your nephew is ‘pretty annoying,’ (0.78 annoying) rather than simply defining him as annoying (1) or not annoying (0). Using the concept of fuzzy logic in machine learning means we can train systems to recognize and act on these partial truths.”

So, in a nutshell, fuzzy logic doesn’t mean your computer had too much to drink. It means it’s able to understand nuances and keep work moving.

Bringing it all into focus

If your invoice process is a little fuzzy, it’s time to bring it into focus.
