Live from HIMSS18: Looking toward a healthier future

I joined the Hyland PR team in November and have the privilege of connecting our healthcare team with journalists who cover the industry. As someone who’s relatively new to healthcare, the more I learn, the more complexity emerges.

Understanding the disparate technologies our customers rely on – not to mention the regulations and organizational structures at play – makes me eager to find ways to bridge those gaps. I’m biased, of course, but the way Hyland connects the dots within and across healthcare providers and payers makes me excited about the future of healthcare.

It’s also what excites me about HIMSS18. There are so many experts and emerging ideas in one place, all working to move healthcare forward. But what does the future of healthcare look like?

As a newbie, I’m hoping HIMSS will tell me. And, after the opening keynote, I know I’ve come to the right place.

Technology for a healthier future

Eric Schmidt, the Executive Chairman of Alphabet Inc. (Google’s parent company), kicked things off with a big-picture look at the industry in a session called: “Technology for a healthier future: modernization, machine learning and moonshots.”

He delivered on all of those buzzwords, sharing a vision for the future ideal of healthcare.

Schmidt talked about a futuristic technology he called Dr. Liz that could serve as a perfect conduit between patient, provider and payer. “She” would be in the doctor’s office facilitating the interaction between clinician and patient, suggesting diagnoses and treatment based on rich data, and ultimately capturing all of this for the EMR.

By the way, Dr. Liz would also be part of the patient’s home (should they choose) for day-to-day health monitoring.

While that’s an exciting proposition, Schmidt laid out what’s actually needed to get there, including cloud data storage in what he called a “huge data warehouse,” even huge by Google’s standards. By properly classifying the data and removing it from proprietary silos, these huge volumes of data can lead to successful algorithms and machine learning to inform clinical best practices.

He also focused on interoperability to ensure the disparate systems and data sources can work together. I loved hearing both of these predictions since Hyland works hard to stay ahead of the curve with both interoperability and the cloud.

4 chances to learn at HIMSS18

Over the next few days, I’m excited to take Schmidt’s 50,000-foot view down to the ground level. Here are a few more things I’m excited about at HIMSS18:

Taking advantage of this great opportunity, Hyland Healthcare will test the interoperability of several solutions, including OnBase by Hyland and Acuo by Hyland. This lets us put our products to the test with real-world scenarios, and learn how they play with systems our customers use every day that we might not have had the chance to test yet.

The showcase is a great way to foster the real-time exchange of health data to support continuity of care and improve patient outcomes.

Payers and providers gather to discuss the challenges and opportunities in reducing costs and improving the physician experience. For me, this is where the rubber meets the road. By learning about the costs and opportunities across the healthcare spectrum, real change can happen for patients and clinicians alike.

Hyland’s executives will share insights and answer live questions from viewers on Tues., March 6 and Wed., March 7 at 9 a.m. Pacific. I’m always excited to hear what our healthcare pros have to say, and love that folks who aren’t at HIMSS can join the conversation too.
