We are the champions: Notes from Bill Priemer’s general session speech at #CommunityLIVE

How about that CommunityLIVE Day One General Session opening film? I have to admit, I got a little teary. I’m really hoping there aren’t any photos out there of me weeping in the corner. As an athlete, motivational stories always grab hold of me and don’t let go. It was so perfect, so inspiring.

If that video didn’t get you going, you were probably still in bed.

Going for the gold

Hyland’s President and CEO, Bill Priemer, followed the video. He talked about the 2016 Summer Olympics.

“I was amazed at the level of dedication and commitment,” Priemer said. “Not just the winners, but everyone. These people never stop trying to get better. That’s the mark of a true champion.”

If you want to be a champion, you have to put in that work. That’s why we’re here at CommunityLIVE – to come together and help each other get better. In turn, when we all head back to our jobs, there’s a spillover effect.

“We have more than a thousand OnBase champions here at CommunityLIVE. You and your contributions have huge impacts on your organizations,” Priemer continued. “In return, you get the satisfaction of knowing you help colleagues become better by giving them the tools they need to become more efficient, effective and agile. Our mission is to help organizations – and the people within them – achieve their full potential. For those of you who are becoming champions, this is your training.”

3 traits of champions

Champions share three traits in common, according to Priemer. They are:

1. Confidence

“Confidence starts with the product,” said Priemer. “Whether that product is your speed, ability to jump high or enterprise software, you need to be confident in what your product does. We’re pretty confident in our product. It’s the enterprise content management industry’s most robust solution, and we constantly improve it. In fact, we’re going to spend $65 million in research and development this year. When we released OnBase 16 this spring, it had 3,000 new features alone.”

And many of those features are driven by you. The fact that we’re solving the business issues you’re experiencing gives us confidence.

“Whether it’s mobile content management, advanced capture or integrations with leading solutions in all our verticals, we’re a leader. And the analysts agree. OnBase offers robust applications with the security you need to protect critical business documentation. It also delivers the intuitive interfaces that users are demanding,” said Priemer.

It all starts with that confidence. Confidence to hire the right people, treat them well and help them train hard.

“We have the most experienced enterprise content management experts in the world, period,” Priemer said. “We’re hiring while our competitors are becoming leaner. A great company to work for is always a great company to work with. We’re celebrating our silver anniversary and we’re continuing to expand. So you have every reason to expect to successfully work with us 10 or 20 years from now. That’s confidence.”

2. The ability to leave comfort zones

“We challenged ourselves to rethink our own solutions, to rethink enterprise content management. And we realized OnBase has evolved into an enterprise information platform. You can just see the amazing potential of the product. OnBase is a platform that is a single content repository, a hub, which solves the chaotic business environments out there,” said Priemer.

Then, he enthusiastically challenged us to move past our comfort zones.

“Whether it’s capture, case management solutions to facilitate interactions and better collaborate, ShareBase for secure cloud-based file sharing or business process management, pick an area and dive deep this week,” said Priemer. “We have case study sessions where you can hear from other customers, expert stations and the other attendees. Move out of your comfort zone and introduce yourself to someone new.”

3. Training hard

“There is no substitute for flat-out training hard,” said Priemer. “Your attendance shows that you’re a champion. You’re ready to train hard. There are 32 expert stations, 29 hands-on labs, and 272 Hyland employees. We’re your training partner. By the end of this conference, we should all be really tired. If not, we didn’t train hard enough. Training is an essential piece of the process. Take that power and do something special. Maybe something others were afraid to try.”

That spoke to me. And I hope it resonates with you. Because it brings all three of Priemer’s points together. When you train hard, you have confidence, and that confidence allows you try new things, to move past your comfort zone.

“Training is solitary. But the fun happens when you join your team and win together. It’s much more satisfying when we win together, with our friends,” said Priemer.

So true. I’m very happy to be here at CommunityLIVE, meeting customers and listening to their stories. Have a great rest of the week, and as The University of Notre Dame’s football team (the Fightin’ Irish) says, “Play like a champion today.”
