Everything you always wanted to know about the Form I-9 (at the second annual I-9 Palooza)

Once upon a time, I-9 compliance was a relatively simple topic for HR and hiring managers. There was a one-page I-9 form, a pamphlet-sized handbook, and a very slim chance of getting into trouble with the government. Back in the 90s and early 2000s, you had a higher likelihood of winning the lottery than receiving a Form I-9 Notice of Inspection. And the closest thing we had to electronic verification was the Basic Pilot program (a precursor to E-Verify) which was only available in a few states and required installation of software and a modem.

Fast-forward to today, and worksite compliance now looks very different. First and foremost, enforcement efforts have measurably increased across the board, from I-9 inspections, to discrimination complaints, to E-Verify compliance activities. Expectations surrounding compliance have also risen. Gone are the days when an errant I-9 or botched verification would stay safely buried in the deep dark recesses of your HR files. There’s now actually a pretty good chance that you might be invited to share these secrets with an inspecting government agency – an event for which most employers are sorely unprepared.

Fortunately, there are proven strategies for righting these wrongs and ultimately reconciling the often-conflicting goals of I-9 compliance and business success. It all starts with education – a deep but necessary plunge into the inner workings of I-9 completion, audit preparedness, discrimination avoidance, and evolving policy changes. And I invite all HR professionals to take this important step by attending the second annual I-9 Palooza at CommunityLIVE – the premier event for learning about I-9 and E-Verify compliance from industry experts and HR peers.

Taking place September 11 through 13 in Nashville, I-9 Palooza offers HR professionals a unique opportunity to participate in educational sessions on managing new hire I-9s, streamlining the onboarding process, and staying compliant with the latest state and federal guidelines. And as its name implies, I-9 Palooza offers a veritable smorgasbord of I-9 and E-Verify compliance information – including both substantive and practical advice on managing HR’s favorite 2-page form.

Need more convincing? Below, we’ve compiled the top five benefits of attending this year’s can’t miss event:

1. Be a part of an information-packed event dedicated solely to HR professionals who manage the Form I-9 and E-Verify process

The sessions will focus on topics such as: recent I-9 and E-Verify trends and legislative updates; benefits and drawbacks to moving from paper to electronic I-9s; strategies for surviving a Form I-9 audit; addressing unique foreign national scenarios; understanding advanced E-Verify issues; managing remote hire I-9s; avoiding a Department of Justice investigation; and much, much more.

2. Earn Recertification Credit

This year’s content was designed with HR professionals like you in mind, and we’re excited to offer I-9 Palooza attendees 11.5 HR General recertification credit hours toward aPHR, PHR, PHRca, SPHR, GPHR, PHRi and SRHRi, as well as 5.5 PDC credits, which can be used toward SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP recertification.

3. Hear from I-9 experts and your HR peers as they discuss challenges and strategies related to streamlining the Form I-9 and E-Verify process

The 2018 I-9 Palooza speakers come from a wide range of industries and will be comprised of members of the Fortune 500 as well as some of the world’s largest retailers. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from these speakers first-hand, participate in interactive discussions and brainstorm on new ideas to improve the onboarding process.

4. Attend an educational, best practice event – NOT a user conference

I-9 Palooza is made up of two specialty tracks. The first track is exclusively for HR professionals and compliance managers who would like to learn best practices and strategies on managing their I-9 and E-Verify operations. The second track is dedicated to maximizing clients’ investment in the LawLogix Guardian I-9 and E-Verify solution.

5. Get your tricky Form I-9 and E-Verify questions answered

I-9 Palooza will provide attendees with a unique forum to meet with I-9 experts, face-to-face, and get tricky I-9 and E-Verify questions answered.  Whether the topic is related to auditing, remote hire compliance, E-Verify, or fines and penalties – there really is no better place to get the clarity you need on the I-9 issues plaguing your organization.

Now more than ever, employers need to focus on their I-9 and E-Verify obligations in order to weather the ever-present storm of enforcement and stay ahead of the curve as new obligations arise. We sincerely hope that you and your team can make the trip to Nashville for this one of a kind event – which is now only a few months away.
