3 reasons why I love my Hyland internship

The last time I wrote, I was raving to you all about the value of a post-grad internship. Now I’m here to rave to you about the value of a Hyland career.

This is my fifth month as an intern, and I am loving it more and more every day. As soon as I started, I was able to take advantage of ALL the fun perks Hyland offers. I got a massage once a week, ate my weight in food truck treats at our Food Truck Frenzies, downed a few White Claws at our happy hours, slid down a few of the slides, took a couple spin classes and ate all the free pretzels I could stomach.

While all of these perks got me excited to go to work in the beginning, I am learning that the reason I am obsessed with my job is for reasons that are a lot deeper than massages and free pretzels.

3 reasons why I love my internship

Here are the more important reasons why I love my job:

1. Innovation and evolution

I started interning at Hyland during a transitional time for the marketing department. We were in the midst of restructuring the way we address content, creative, digital, media, public relations and social media needs. While innovation drives our software solutions, it’s also at the heart of our marketing efforts.

Cool stuff, huh? And I got to experience all of these changes first hand!

For example, over the summer, Hylanders who work in marketing, but live all over the world, traveled to our corporate headquarters for an offsite meeting. There, we collaborated to evolve our department’s mission, discussed how to implement these changes, participated in team-building activities and, as most Hyland events usually end, attended a happy hour.

Meeting colleagues who work remotely in my department was the first time I was able to see just how global Hyland is. I love knowing that in some way, I was contributing to the changes that were occurring within marketing.

2. Doing good

Of all the cool perks, one of my favorites is being able to take a day off work to participate in service projects around Cleveland. During Hyland’s Summer of Service, I chose to volunteer at the Migration and Refugee Services division of Cleveland’s Catholic Charities.

Throughout the morning, we sat in on English classes and spoke to refugees about their experiences and difficult journeys to the U.S. Meeting people from very different walks of life was a very humbling experience. Without this service opportunity, I may never have met these individuals who have taught me so much about hard work and perseverance.

3. Teamwork makes the dream work

Another reason I love my job so much (and probably the main reason) is my team. We have some big, unique personalities on the corporate communications team. My manager is a hilarious, no-nonsense, fearless leader to us all and my mentor is a quirky, seasoned social media professional – both whom I have come to truly admire.

I have a rather large team, so I’m not going to define the personality of each person. That should be a whole other blog post. But the important takeaway is that no matter what project I’m working on – whether it be social, PR or working with people outside of our department – my team is there to guide and support me to achieve the best possible outcome.

What comes next?

Quick reminder in case you forgot: I’ve been here for just five months. And, honestly, I’m having the time of my life!

I can only imagine what’s up next for me in my career and I can’t wait to find out.
