Looking back at the 2018 Blockland Solutions Conference, and looking forward

Before we say goodbye to the inaugural Blockland Solutions Conference, I’d like to call attention to how important this event was, especially for the Cleveland community. The conference helped further establish our city as a significant technology center by becoming a leader in blockchain solutions, which will also increase our ability to recruit the best in tech.

We’re on a roll here, and we’re not stopping now.

Tech brings change. You may not like it, but if you hate change, you’re really going to hate extinction.

– Beth Mooney, chairperson and CEO at KeyCorp, speaker at Blockland

Just as blockchain is a decentralized, distributed ledger technology that lets users control and update the record of information, the leadership established for this initiative is decentralized as well. This ensures that any single organizations or people involved cannot hinder our progress – we’ll keep moving forward.

To provide a little clarity, blockchain is secured by cryptography and maintains a continuously growing list of records, called blocks. As it grows in popularity, it’s becoming a platform for cryptocurrencies and other distributed ecosystems, because anyone can trace any transaction.

It’s also a major disruptor in the tech industry – which is the reason so many people are interested in it.

Don’t opt out of the future, learn the language.

– John Donovan, CEO at AT&T Communications, keynote speaker at Blockland

As a Hylander, I was proud to attend as one of the conference’s presenting partners. I was also excited to see that the conference sold out! It was an incredible experience that included more than 2,000 innovators, entrepreneurs, and business leaders.

2019 is right around the corner

Blockland 2018 was such a success, the people involved are already starting to plan next year’s conference. Meanwhile, early next year, Blockland is planning to announce the location of its technology incubator and innovation center, where startup businesses and researchers can share space. It’s goal is to become the biggest think tank incubator in the country and/or world for blockchain exploration!

Another Blockland goal for 2019 is to bring in and train 1,000 new developers to explore blockchain technology.

People are at the top of our agenda, and the Blockland initiative and Solutions Conference fostered meaningful conversations that are helping us identify, attract, train, and retain amazing talent in our region.

– Brenda Kirk, EVP and chief product and strategy officer at Hyland, speaker at Blockland

As if this wasn’t enough, Tri-C (Cuyahoga Community College), Case Western Reserve University, and Cleveland State are partnering to create the “Blockland and digital futures hub” to help attract world-class faculty and researchers not only in regards to blockchain, but in other emerging technologies as well.

Creating an internet of value

On Monday night, Alex Tapscott, author of Blockchain Revolution: How the Technology Behind Bitcoin and Other Cryptocurrencies is Changing the World, gave a great keynote speech explaining how blockchain is the key to creating an internet of value. He’s encouraging everyone to get involved in the Blockchain Research Institute – one of the leading researchers and think tanks for blockchain technology.

I think that’s a great way to end – creating an internet of value. It’s easy to get excited about all the wow factors involved in tech, and all the “things,” but we have to stay focused on creating value.

That’s how we incubate a revolution.
